Written Words
A writer’s Cradle
My immediate elder brother Jayaraj was my inspiration for writing short stories. Jayaraj used to write detective stories and suspense thrillers. We had a handwritten 'monthly' magazine, where we wrote our first short stories. This magazine was circulated amongst our friends at the Tea Estate. Interestingly, our magazine was read by children and adults alike. We had tremendous following.
As we grew up, my brother discontinued this passion on joining Merchant Navy. I moved to Calcutta. Bengal has a rich heritage in literature, and I soon found myself spending my evenings and holidays discussing novels, short stories and poetry at a small literary circle. They would criticise my writings, debated on my view points, suggest modifications in my stories or simply turn into waste paper basket. My confidence grew.
Literary Pursuit
Though not a prolific writer, many of my short stories / articles have appeared in various leading English Magazines / Newspapers in India. First published in Shanker's Weekly in 1973. Unfortunately, this magazine ceased publication during the Emergency period. A collection of my short stories was brought out under the title "The Curse And Other Tales" by McGraw Publishing Inc., Texas, USA.
One of my stories, “Bridging The Rainbow”, can be read in The Writersnet Anthology of Prose (Fiction) edited by Gary D Kassler, published by Writers Club Press (October 2002). This book is a collection of the best of the material submitted by writers across four continents, both published and unpublished.
